Camping area features
Shelfo is a great place to relax, catch some sooty grunter, a few cherabin (freshwater prawns), or even hook onto a barramundi. It is a popular site for travellers heading north or south as it is a welcome respite from the dusty road. It is a great place to sit back in the shade of the paperbark trees and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Location (approximate readings)
Shelfo campsites are just upstream from the main crossing of the Mitchell River on the
Kowanyama – Pormpurraw road. Map reference -15.36, 141.97. Latitude: 15°22'18.58"S and longitude: 141°57'31.17"E
Access
4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. The nearest vehicle access is a couple hundred meters off the southeast side of the Kowanyama – Pormpurraw road and just upstream from the main crossing of the Mitchell River.
Number of sites
There are 2 sites that are not separately defined. There is a maximum allowance of 15 people per site.
Camp sites are suitable for: self-sufficient camping, fishing, bird watching.
Facilities
Except for a drop toilet, there are no facilities, so campers must be self-sufficient and bring all their necessities. All rubbish (including food scraps) must be carried out.
Generator use: Allowed.
Camp fires: Allowed unless otherwise notified.
Alcohol/Drugs
The carriage or possession of alcohol or drugs is not permitted anywhere on Kowanyama lands including campsites.

CROCODILE WARNINGS
The sites are entirely remote and not attended or patrolled. All users of these sites and facilities do so entirely at their own risk. Crocodiles are native residents and have been spotted at all locations. In confirming this booking, you accept all responsibility and recognise the risks associated with the site.
